“Glass of Ashes” stands out as a unique song of failed relationship regret in that the funky vibrant groove, energetic lead and smooth soulful background singers remove it from the realm of being a downtrodden lament. Instead, the grooviness gives it a sense of optimism that songs of this subject matter usually lack. It’d be easy to put it in the category of “throwback R&B,” however, the edgy drums and round bass give it modern sensibilities, and hip-hop heads will immediately nod to the subtle classic break reference. A modern soul gem.
