DESCRIPTION
Skylark Soul Company is proud to present the first vinyl release from The Brothers Vanguard, Electriq - a psyche pop exploration from talented songwriter/musician/producers John Dufilho and Aaron Kelley. The 7” release for “Dominoes” b/w a special B-side edit of “Only The Strange Ones Know” blesses the listeners ears with dreamy psyche pop bathing in lush production and dusted hypnotic grooves.
Dufilho and Kelley have known each other for years, dating to back to recording sessions for Dufilho-led projects like Deathray Davies and I Love Math. Back in 2019, Skylark Soul Co. co-founder Skin Wade asked the two to work together and collaborate on a Library Music Project produced in the tradition of the European Library Labels of the 70s that often borrowed from Psyche Music and 60s French Pop.
Dufilho and Kelley's collective skills and sensibilities combined perfectly for this particular sound. The batch of songs they recorded and produced for Wade were so tasty that Wade’s partners in the Skylark Soul label, Luke Sardello and Waric Cameron (Owners of Josey Records), suggested the possibility of doing a vinyl pressing of the UPM project that had originally been made available for licensing and streaming under the name The Shimmering Psychedelic Groove Trip.
Everyone involved decided to release one of the original songs along with a new recording as a 7” single on the label and The Brothers Vanguard, Electriq was “officially” born. Dufilho and Kelley re-enlisted the help of vocalist Jordan Coffing for “Dominoes” and her voice blends with Dufiho’s in a manner that can only be described as other-worldly. The duo’s production choices are stellar and “Dominoes” also greatly benefits from the deft mixing skills of the amazingly talented Jordan Richardson (Son of Stan/Ben Harper/Ringo Starr).
Kelley stays busy with his production and engineering work for major labels and artists like DFW legend Sarah Jaffe while Dufilho (one of the most prolific Dallas-based artists/songwriters of the last 20 years was most recently heard on his first all-electronic release under the moniker JOHN BUFFALO for the excellent indie-label State Fair Records. Despite their busy schedules however, The Vanguard crew have a batch of trippy recordings that Skylark Soul Co. intends to unleash in the future. So dig in as there's much more to come...
